Effective
Follow-Up Techniques
Following
up after the interview is critical to leaving a favorable
impression. A well-written and timely thank you note
or letter will provide a glimpse of what kind of employee
you would be and will set you apart from other candidates.
During
the interview, ask for a business card from each person that
you meet with during the interview process.
This will help you use correct spelling of names and
correct titles.
Send
a thank you note or letter as soon as possible following the
interview. If
you have good handwriting, neatly write a handwritten note
on personal stationary or a professional thank you card.
If
you do not have good handwriting, send a formal letter of
thanks on resume paper. Do not send your thank you via email unless 1) the manager will be making their decision within 48 hours, and 2) you collected their business card during the interview.
How to Write A Great Thank You Note/Letter:
Be brief.
Your thank
you note or letter should only include the following:
-
Thank you
for your time.
-
After
discussing the (title of position) opportunity with you,
I am very interested in joining your company. Given
my experience, I am confident that I will quickly become
an asset to your organization.
-
Your
(highlight an interesting point of discussion about the
company, manager or position) was particularly impressive.
-
I look
forward to further discussing my qualifications and how
I may support your team in achieving (name of company)'s
organizational objectives.
-
Don't
forget to proofread grammar and spelling errors!
